It's been a long time in coming for one of the most consistently good teams in baseball. More than that, Biggio and Bagwell really deserve this. Two of the classiest guys in baseball.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was

THE ASTROS WIN THE PENNANT! THE ASTROS WIN THE PENNANT! OH, MY GOD, THE ASTROS WIN THE PENNANT!

Um... I thought the pennant was the next set.. This was national championships?

(Yes, I just watched the end of the game too. Three outs in a row.. cool!)

I'm rooting for the White Sox overall, but I was certainly cheering on the Astros tonight. Man, Oswalt was on fire!

League Championship = "Pennant"
World Series = Teh Ubar

Heretics, the both of you.

But as long as it's not the Yankees or the Braves, I'm pretty much happy.

I know why I hate the Yankees. That's simple jealousy. My distaste for the Braves runs deeper. I think it's because they're from Atlanta. And since I've never been to Georgia, I assume it's basically like Mississippi.

having never been to mississippi, I can't say, but Atlanta is a great city. The Braves, well they just can't win in the playoffs, but they can get there... every fucking year.

I despise Atlanta. Worst city in the US to drive in. It's no wonder they lost money on the Olympics. 1) Every street is either '*Peach*" or "*Pine*", and 2) the street signs lead you the wrong way. I followed a standard sign that indicated a hotel 1 mile down a road. I went 1 mile down the road. Nothing. (Turns out that the sign should have said - turn right, go .2 miles, turn right, then go .8 miles, and there's the hotel. No, there wasn't a second sign at the intersection).
3) No access roads. You can't get there from here. I tried to get to a Best Western right next to the freeway - forget it. You can't do that. Even with the supposed help of a Cabbie, I couldn't get to it. I ended up 20 miles away at a La Quinta near the airport.

But at least they have a local brand of soda called "Coca-Cola," which is a rare commodity in the rest of the world.

I take issue with this. There are tons of access roads in Atlanta.

It's the access roads for the access roads that are a bitch to find.

(Made the mistake of trusting a dinky little hotel map of the immediate area while in Atlanta last year. Mapmakers, rectangle != trapezoid, and don't put _____ St. right next to _____ Ave., DAMN it.) (I guess that last bit is for the roadmakers.)

I'll take some exception to that. There aren't any access roads for the freeways. There are onramps and offramps, but no access roads.

Severn knows what I'm talking about. They are one to three lane roads on either side of the freeways, traveling in the same direction as the traffic on the freeway (one way on each side, unless you're way out in the country - then they can be two way, two lane roads on each side of the freeway)

It's called "See something you'd like to get to? Take the next exit, turn around, go back and you'll be able to get to it without a problem."

I promise that I know what access roads are--they may have only been in the part of Atlanta I was visiting, but they do exist. So, yeah, hyperbole on the "tons" part.

I was agreeing with you in spirit ("driving in Atlanta eats"), of course. I managed to turn onto an access road *instead* of the freeway during previously-mentioned trip. Doesn't sound so bad, except that the freeway ramp was going to loop around to the direction I wanted to go, while the access road was a straight shot the other way. And did you know that there are apparently two consecutive exits somewhere in Atlanta that are 15 miles apart?

Yes, these seem, in my experience, to be far more common in Texas. Every freeway has them, and a good number of large city roads do as well. I call them "frontage roads" because that's what the signs say. Houstonites tend to call them "feeder roads," which irritates me for no particular reason. Access roads is fine, though.

sorry I'm late, but

WHITE SOX WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, that feels good. Nothing against the Astros, mind you -- very competitive team. Just not as good as the Sox. And I NEVER thought I could ever talk smack about the White Sox and get away with it!

Actually, I watched enough of the games to be able to say that this is absolutely wrong. Both teams were so closely matched that NONE of the games were 'walk away' wins. _Every_ game had the chance to go both ways (except for one where the Astros' pitcher pulled a hamstring, which is again, chance).

Just look at the records set - two longest games, and so forth. I think that's part of the reason that I haven't heard _anyone_ down here (In Houston) complaining that the Astros 'gave away' the games, or anything similar. Everyone was just happy that they 1) Won the pennant, and 2) fought like heck in the World Series.

In the main, BW, you are correct, but the Sox did win, and if you look at the statistics, the Sox had superior pitching (partuicularly the bullpen) and the Astros squandered way too many opportunities. It was the most closely matched 4 game series ever. It might as well have been 7 games.

Right - as you said, it was closely matched, and it might as well have been 7 games. Some of what the Astros gave up were because of things beyond their control (pulled hamstring, for example). The Sox did some of the same things.

You just can't say one team was 'better' than the other - they both came out on top in their respective groups, and one will win, the other won't.

Like I said before, I haven't heard anyone down here bitching about the loss, and I'd HOPE that there wouldn't be as much gloating about the win further north. It _could easily_ have gone either way - it didn't. It was strange it was a sweep, but every single game since the first was a "last second" decision.

Well, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Two great teams faced off. The Sox showed themselves the better team, but it was close, and close games are fun to watch.

I think close games suck to play, but maybe that's just me.

Well, I'll only gloat over the fact that we won -- first time in the World Series in 46 years, first time winning the series in 88 years. Its the fulfillment of a life long dream of mine. I think the Sox played "smarter," if that can be said. Many of Garner's decisions have to be quesitoned, and the play by play decisions of individual players in action -- whether what pitch was called, what pitch a batter was looking for, decisions about baserunning or where to throw the ball -- on those matters, the Sox outplayed the Astros. The Sox also had the advantage of being more rested, and in control of thier pitching rotation. That was the luck of the draw, the way the timing of things turned out -- had Oswalt started game 1 on the strength of his previous playoff performances, I think the tide of the Series could have been different. So, perhaps, the whole thing could be blamed on Brad Lidge, who gave up a home run to Pujols to extend the NLCS so as to cause Houston to go into the Series without its best pitchers up front, and of course, Lidge lost 2 of the games in the Series.

I know we're basically agreeing -- if the Sox as `Stros played another 7 game series starting today, Houston might sweep. But as a long suffering White Sox fan, this was very sweet indeed!
